Captain Joseph Thomas Brady U.S. Army 1937 – 1957

Joe entered the United States Army in 1937, direct from a Civilian Conservation Corps unit in the middle of Pennsylvania and was immediately sent to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, where he completed basic infantry training.

Upon his return to Philadelphia in 1939, the depression was still lingering and employment was not to be found, so Joe decided the military was the place for him.  He was assigned to Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington D.C.  He performed various duties from guard duty to post office clerk and then was assigned to Camp Pickett, Virginia to help start a medical training company.  While at Camp Pickett he successfully completed Officer’s Candidate School at Camp Barkley, Texas and commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant.

From 1944-1949 Joe was trained in and taught first aid and basic medical courses at Fort Lee, Virginia, Fort Lewis, Washington and in Europe.

Joe returned to the states and assigned to Boston Army Base where he worked with reserve units to help organize station and general hospitals and evacuation units to be used in the Pacific area.

At the outbreak of the Korean War, Joe helped plan and organize smaller training units to care for and ready wounded patients for transportation to Japan and the United States for cure and recovery.

In 1952 Joe was assigned to 8th Army Headquarters in Seoul, Korea where he continued to train replacement personnel.  During this time he was further assigned to the Japan Medical Depot and also saw duty in Taipei, Taiwan.

Joe retired in 1957 in San Antonio, Texas.  In 1961 he graduated from Trinity University, and for the next 14 years worked in the Manpower and Budgeting Division of the Army Surgeon General’s Office in Washington, D.C. a fulfilling, satisfying and pleasant working career.
