Colonel William Patrick Madigan, USA Retired, 1948 - 1979

William (Bill) Madigan is a retired Army Colonel.  He was born in Chicago, Illinois, a well-traveled Army brat, who attended the University of Hawaii and graduated from the University of Iowa.  He did graduate work at both New York University and the University of Alabama. He is a graduate from the Army War College, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Command and General Staff College, the Navy Post  Graduate School, and the Artillery and Quartermaster Branch Schools.

                                     

  Bill was commissioned in 1948 and retired in 1979.  During his career he has served in many high level command and staff positions.  His military assignments in the Army were extensive and included the Occupation of Japan, the Korean War, and two tours in Vietnam.  He served as a Commander of an overseas Army Depot (to include a Support Group and 1300 Vietnamese employees), and had Battalion, Battery, and Company level commands.  He served on the Department of the Army staff, the Field Army and Joint Chiefs of Staff.  The units he commanded in Korea and Vietnam each received Meritorious Unit Citations for the periods under his command.

 

  Bill’s military honors include 39 medals and awards, and the most significant ones being three Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and numerous United States, Korean, and Vietnamese decorations.  His Korean Medal, Hwarang, is the second highest military award the Korean government bestows, as well as the Vietnam Medal of Honor.

 

  After Bill’s military retirement, he and his wife, Jeanne, both worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  He worked for the Saudi Arabia Army and Jeanne worked for the Army Corps of Engineers.  He also worked 13 years as a Smithsonian docent for the National History Museum prior to retirement.

 

  Bill and Jeanne have been married 30 years, and prior to moving to Falls Run lived in Arlington, Virginia.  They now reside at 8 Brunswick Drive.  Bill has one son, Dr. William Patrick Madigan, Jr. (COL, retired) in Virginia, who is currently Vice Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and two daughters, Lillian Catherine (Lisa) McAullife in New York, and Candace Clouser Madigan in Virginia, and one granddaughter, Kelly Elizabeth Madigan in New York.
